Microsoft Unveils Surface Computing ( + Videos)

Microsoft has unveiled its new computing concept. Being able to use a computer on surfaces. Microsoft is dashing the boring old idea of a computer being stuck on a desk. Instead it envisions a future when ordinary surfaces such as tables, mirrors, and other surface will be computers.

Microsoft Surface is quite an amazing concept. It all began with the idea of an interactive table back in 2001 - the idea of mixing the physical world with the virtual one. What’s amazing is that it requires no keyboard or mouse.

You simply use your hands to move objects on the display. The display will be intuitive and so it will be able to recognize objects that are placed on it.

Microsoft gave the example of a wine glass. The computer would be able to recognize the type of wine in the glass and give you information on it. You would have information on where the grapes are grown, tours that are available and hotels that you could stay in if you wanted to visit that area all at the touch of your fingertips.

It would also be able to detect digital content (for example images in a digital camera) and it would allow for easy display and sharing of the images to your friends.

What’s quite amazing is that fact that Surface can handle multi-touch. Motions know as “gestures” require more than an action taken with one finger and yet the computer is able to understand an action and act accordingly.

Because these computers are on surfaces, more than one person is able to interact with the computer.

The Surface will be originally available to companies. Microsoft is going to be putting the Surface tabletop in hotels, retail establishments, restaurants and public entertainment venues. The cost is way to much for the average user.

But as prices go down and more applications are written it is Microsoft’s vision that we will see these types of computers become part of our daily lives whether at home or in a store.

Below are some very short videos of some of the amazing possiblilities with Microsoft Surface. See it in action:
