Civil cases cost a great deal of money and finding a lawyer who deals with Internet Law is not an easy task. I wish him much luck.

@Phil

I took a law class in high school and was considering using libel because it was the correct term.

I decided to use slander because more people would probably understand what was said, but you are entirely correct.

@ lol

I'm now suing you for making libelous remarks about my sexual orientation :).

A comment on a forum isn't slander - it's libel. Slander is *verbal* defamation whereas libel is written.

Anyway who says you can't be sued for libelous comments on a forum? I've heard of cases in the UK where entire forums have been closed down by ISPs because someone has merely made an *allegation* that there is libelous content on them and threatened to sue. Of course the forum owners get mad because the ISPs have such a kneejerk reaction without even checking to see if the allegations are true. To me, that shows just how petrified they are that they'll be taken to court for something that a user has said.

I would think if you libel someone you would be liable to be sued no matter *where* you do it. Why would you be allowed to get away with something on the web that you would be sued for in a newspaper? Suing the ISP is another matter. That would be like suing the phone company because someone said something slanderous on the telephone.

Like I wrote above, the owner can't divulge the actual comment because they have asked for all records of his blog and he isn't allowed to say anything while it's still being settled.

yes i heard .. but i think this is BS and a stupid Lawsuit (America is known for such stupid lawsuites because of our stupid justice system) ..

Now you can't get sued for a slanderous comment on a forum .. why is the blog being treated different?

Even in a chat room .. you can only get into trouble if you make threats and a person feels unsafe .. what was the slanderous comment? does anyone have a copy of that comment?
