Yahoo! to Google: We Surrender

GoogleIn the battle to be the number one search engine Yahoo!, it seems, has officially capitulated to the Google Empire.

Chief Financial Officer Susan Decker said:

“We don’t think it’s reasonable to assume we’re going to gain a lot of share from Google.”

“It’s not our goal to be No. 1 in Internet search. We would be very happy to maintain our market share.”

The reaction to this story is first shock, and then a feeling that we really knew this was going to happen anyway.

It seems that now, no search engine is ever going to be able to catch up with Google. Heck it’s Game Over for someone starting a new search engine now.

So what does this all mean?

Yes, Yahoo! will still be there and MSN probably still thinks it can catch up with Google (read my 2006: Microsoft vs. Google post).

However, is that really possible? I don’t think so.

Google has become the Microsoft of search engines, except in a nice way. Google grows at an exponential rate and is constantly quicker than the rest.

They have come out with innovative and free software and have become the search engine by literally categorizing everything out there (movies, music, videos, blogs, etc.).

Microsoft is obviously not too pleased and they will try everything to beat Google.

Microsoft, the large and slow beast that it is, just cannot defeat the quick and dynamically changing Google.

And Google will not stop. They are relentless as they have proven and probably were underestimated by many.

As I predicted before, 2006 is going to be a big year for Microsoft and Google as the fight for dominance on the Internet and software front continues.

So, as Yahoo! finds itself hanging on to market share and MSN desperately tries to dig up it’s only going to be a matter of time until another one bites the dust.
