What is Spyware And Adware?
As you know there are many people who surf the Net today.
Not all of them are “technical” and for that reason I wanted to create a layman’s page where someone would easily explain what spyware and adware is and the common questions that arise with it.
What is Spyware?
As you may be aware there are many places where you can find free downloads to software.
I want to begin by saying not all free downloads contain spyware and that you shouldn’t stop downloading free and legal software because of spyware and adware.
However, spyware is received by downloading free software (usually the publishers are paid to include the spyware, thus the reason it is free). The spyware is bundled with the free software you are downloading.
When you install the software the spyware is also installed. It then can access personal information and spy on your surfing habits.
What is Adware?
Adware is recieved in the exact same fashion as spyware. However, adware can upload user information and display annoying pop-ups or banners displaying advertisements on your computer even when you are not on the Internet.
Adware can even hijack your browser (mostly Internet Explorer) allowing new websites to be placed in the Favorites or Bookmarks section or even changing the location of your homepage.
How Do I Know If I Have Spyware or Adware?
- Your computer is running slower than usual
- You see annoying pop ups even when you are not connected to the Internet
- Your Internet homepage has changed from what the default
- You Internet browser has been hijacked with Porn, Gambling or Poker sites being added in your Favorites section
- You have recently downloaded software or music online and begun to see any of the changes in your computer mentioned above.
What Can I do to Get Rid of Spyware or Adware?
Thankfully there are free (reputable spyware free) programs that eliminate these pesky pieces of software.

How Can I Protect Myself From Spyware and Adware?
When you download free software you must agree to the End User Licence Agreement.
That is where the publisher will tell you that the software contains spyware or adware. Read it. It will save much trouble later.
If you see phrases such as: advertising, third-party, promotional messages, or other terms you deem suspicious do not install the software.
