Well, I dont think that pirating (or hacking or cracking or whatever) is totally legit, but I dont think that 1. Microsoft is hurting much - the feds keep having to break it up to keep them from ruling the world, 2. My pirated copy of windows didnt cost them profits, I wouldnt have bought it if I didnt pirate it (Linspire 5.0 for now) and the same goes for the music industry. When Bill Gates or any of the other Microsoft head honchos have to drop prices on the software because theyre LOSING money, then I'll buy it.

And FYI windows verification is crap. I was able to get my free copy of windows XP pro verified immediatley, but theyre giving me hell trying to get the legit copy I own on my laptop verified. I really dont care, if I get viruses, I can remove them. hackers? yeah right. I'm sure all my other computer techs out there who actually KNOW what they are doing agree with that.

imagine that, i worked for bill too.. and hes got like 50 billion dollars to his name. he needs more why? to invest in software developement? well if hes concerned about 20 billion for developement, why not invest it himself? omg, that would take him to 30 billion dollars. how the hell could ANYONE live on JUST 30 billion dollars? I know i sure couldnt.. id be in poverty if i had only 30 billion dollars. Piratehator you ass clown. 1. spell your name right. 2. you are the most ignorant person using a computer. 3. microsoft doesnt make any money on their software? then how come all the employees get it for free? its called "corporate edition". they dont lose any money on that. if one person buys windows xp pro for 499.99 dollars (retail) and it only costs the company 5 dollars to make, including packaging and every other damn thing in the box, that would be a nice 495 dollars profit. which would mean that over about 100 people could pirate that and microsoft would still be making money, because pirated versions dont come with the box or cd. just downloaded, or burned from a download. man im done talking about this.

You guys all need to stop your wining. Do you not understand that microsoft makes very little to no profit off of Windows? have you guys ever heard of development? it cost Billions of dollars to develope a system like windows... it takes YEARS before a company can make money off of an OS. so if you want to have a system that isnt acceptable to virus' STOP PIRATING software. obviously Microsoft is a big enough company that they dont care about your wining asses. If people were to stop pirating software there would be over 20 BILLION dollars in microsofts development. which means better versions of Windows. what you morons dont see is that by pirating software your hurting yourselves and the consumer NOT microsoft they dont need your money if only 35 percent of the software is pirated that means 65 percent isnt they dont need your money. but if you stop being so dumb we wouldnt need to pirate software DUH

True you don't steal car that you cannot afford but there is no such thing is a used windows XP. Furthermore, each car cost the same to build but with windows after you build the program it cost less than a dollar to reproduce each copy. Anyway, that does not justified stealing but I surely understand why ppl do it. Each XP cost over $300.00 not many ppl can afford that. A tip to those who wants to buy a legit copy but cannot afford...go to small computer store and buy an OEM one..it is alot cheaper.

I have a pirated version of XP Pro with all the updates turned off, and I've never seen a nag screen. However, there will no doubt be patches available soon enough (if they aren't already) to remove this entirely.

97% margin on software is totally absurd.

I buy software that is worth the going price (NOT Windoze - which is always an unfinished security risk at best). M$ can suck on that.

I totally agree, I bought XP Home, and then XP Media (more than 300 dollars worth of software) to later my surprise that XP Pro is better then the 2 of them put together. I am a technician and we basically run our computers into the ground. I normally reinstall windows 2-4 times a year. Then after 3 re-installs Microsoft has the guts to tell me that I have to contact them for something I PAID FOR. When I pay for a car, it's mine to keep, not have someone tell me in 5 years it'll be worth one tenth what I paid for it and I can't use it anymore because "Microsoft says so". Microsoft is going to have to face the fact that for every time they put up a defence against cracking (it's called cracking not hacking people) it'll be counted in weeks (or even days) till someone finds a workaround. The reason isn't because we take pleasure in ripping off a industry, it is because people can do things on their own, we don't need Microsoft for all computer services (that's like I saying I need a mechanic to do all the work on my car, "I'll rotate my own damn wheels thank-yah kindly").

And another thing, before you get your technician seal, you have to take a computer competency course to prove you know how to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and all those other office programs.... Not much difficult for someone who gets that training all though high school right? Wrong, the testing software for those "Online tests" crash all the time and you end up failing because somehow the thing is lagging. That's right, you can play online with over 50 people on games online, have them talking on mics, text, and doing all the things in video games. But Microsoft can't make a text based online testing system.

But you now what? The day Microsoft makes me a version of windows, or whatever you want to call it that will LAST, and I don't have to update, or worry about being infected from viruses and all that JAZZ. THEN will I buy a version of windows again. Till then, they have already collected WAAAAAY more then what the product is worth.

Or the easy way is to just not install it in the first place. I haven't had a problem since ignoring it in automatic updates.

IMHO the timing of this "feature" should have been better.

For those that may be unaware of the illegal status of thier OS, a good percentage of them will go out and buy XP without knowing that Vista is coming out within a few months.
Now imagine thier annoyance when they realise that there NEW OS brought now is becoming obsolete in 6 months time when vistas promotional campain hits.

Personally i own 2 copies of XP (home and Pro) and have 3 PCs. I wont be bothering to get the 3rd OS until vista is released so i guess i wil have to deal with those nag screens.
