That got your attention! The free software that we’ll discuss today is AMUST’s eCondom.
As many of you are aware, Internet Explorer is a very insecure browser. The browser has been hacked many times, forcing Microsoft to release patch after patch.
Well, AMUST states that if you download and run the eCondom you would be more protected when you are using Internet Explorer.
The utility aims at offers safe Internet usage on Internet Explorer by reducing or eliminating risks that people can receive when visiting sites.
The eCondom protects against:
How Does It Do It?
Basically, the eCondom forces a Windows XP user to use only Internet Explorer as a “User” and not an “Administrator”.
This does not reduce the way a person uses Internet Explorer, but it does make surfing much safer and secure by preventing the installation of malware (bad software).
Dr. Amust says:
Most XP users employ all powerful Admin accounts for everyday use, and most of them are not aware about this fact.
Any malicious code running under an Admin account also becomes all powerful and can track user behaviour, steal personal information or even take over a computer.
Using eCondom will dramatically reduce and eliminate risks from malware because it limits Internet Explorer with “User” privileges which are just enough to browse the Internet.
Microsoft will soon be offering a “Protected Mode” in Internet Explorer (though like a lot of people I wonder how effective it will really be) when it releases Windows Vista.
But you can be protected right now by downloading the free eCondom.
I like the eCondom myself. They beat Microsoft to a decent solution and it uses a setting to only Internet Explorer and not all of Windows XP which enables the user to have the best of both worlds.
Note: The eCondom is not a spyware scanner, antivirus or firewall. It only protects against exploits in Internet Explorer.
You can find out more information about the eCondom from the AMUST website or download it from Download.com

3An update has been released which has a different name and adds the same user right protection to Outlook. Note that installing the program adds an icon for each of the protected programs - IE and Outlook. If you need to have full admin rights, like when you want to use the Windows Update, you click on the original icon. If you try to run Windows Update with the program’s IE icon, you will get a failure message since you won’t have rights to install anything via IE.
This is a no-brainer, as far as I am concerned. I’m rolling it out to my staff.
