A week before Sony came out with the first Blu-Ray supported notebook (the VAIO AR), Toshiba came out with the Qosmioâ„¢ G35-AV650, a notebook that supports the use of the HD DVD format. The HD DVD format is only supported by two companies: Toshiba and NEC. (For a full explanation of these new formats click here)

The fact that the notebook supports the HD DVD, means that the Qosmioâ„¢ G35-AV650 can view high-definition content. The HD DVD-ROM drive is backwards compatible which means you are able to view your current DVDs on it.

The has a 17-inch widescreen with Ultimate TruBrite Technology. The screen displays a maximum pixel resolution of 1920 x 1200. The notebook computer also has an High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) connector which connects to HD TV’s so you can view high definition content in a larger format.

Toshiba’s Qosmio G35-AV650 also has a built-in TV tuner which allows one to view live television from a satellite, cable, or Digital Video Recorder (DVR) input.

Some other interesting features of the HD DVD supported notebook is that it contains a Dual touchpad that can quickly lauch commonly used programs, and a fingerprint reader, which eliminates the use of passwords and adds more security to the notebook.

The notebook includes 1 GB of DDR2 RAM and 200 GB of hard drive space (2 x 100 GB hard drives). Embedded in the motherboard is a NVIDIA GeForce Go 7600 with 256MB of dedicated video memory which makes the viewing of high-definition media partially possible.

The notebook is also can access wireless Local Area Networks (LAN) and is Bluetooth enabled. It contains 4 USB slots and Firewire port. Toshiba’s Qosmio G35-AV650 weighs 10.1 pounds and has the following dimensions (in inches): 16.0 x 11.6 x 1.79.

Toshiba’s HD DVD supported notebook is cheaper, faster, and has more storage space then, Sony’s Blu-Ray enabled notebook. However, the VAIO AR< /a> has more multimedia options and better video software.
