Sometimes you see gadgets out there and you think, ” Wow these guys are just amazing. What a cool idea.” That’s what first came to my mind when I looked into the Solio Charger.
The Solio Charger is a solar, and more importantly, renewable power source for all your hendheld electronic recharging needs.
As you know the sun gives off a lot of energy. Solio uses the energy from the sun and stores it in its internal lithum-ion battery. Then you simply connect it to the electronic device that needs charging, press the button and away you go.
The great thing is that it’s universal. This gadget can recharge mp3 players, digital cameras, cell phones, PDAs and GPS devices.
How Does it Work
The Solio Charger uses a three blade design which contain solar cells on each one. These are pointed at direct sunlight and then take in solar energy and stores it. The connector connects to your device and begins to recharge it’s battery.
This allows you to use your device even if you aren’t near an outlet.
Solio takes a full 8-10 hours for it to fully charge itself. The charge must be in direct sunlight which helps to speed up the time it takes.
The charger also comes with a wall adapter. You simply plug that into a wall outlet and the charger will fully charge within 5 and half hours.
I thought that was a neat and logical addition. I think it makes it more convenient, if your are in a building or home, where the charger is able to store power more quickly.
The Solio Charger comes with different connectors and Solio’s site has a full (and long) list of products it is compatable with.
It also comes with suction cups to which you could affix to a window and begin charging.
Okay so how long does it take to charge my iPod? With a fully charged Solio it would take around 2 hours.
And that’s the key. You want to have this thing fully charged before you head out. That way when one of you devices dies, you can use the full power of Solio to recharge the battery.
In Conclusion
I think the fact that you can take free energy and store it and then use it is such a great concept.
