I found this video while on YouTube.com. The video displays a projector that uses a rear-projection system to display images on a film of transformed air. While the images in the video appear 3-dimensional, the pictures themselves are actually in 2-dimensional form.

The Heliodisplay is suspended in the air, and because it is not attached to a physical surface you will notice that there is some waviness to the projections.

To work the Heliodisplay uses a computer, television or any video input source, and of course a power outlet. The projector can project a maximum diagonal image length of 30 inches.

The image has a 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio. The connection to a computer is via a standard VGA connection, and a cable connection for television or DVD input.

The Heliodisplay’s purpose is to conceal itself within furniture to create a display that does not intrude in any way. The Heliodisplay works best when projected in front of dark backgrounds. In sunlight, the images displayed are near impossible to view.

The Heliodisplay interactive allows the user to interact with the display. They can use their fingers, pens, even scissors as a mouse so that they may move the cursor around the display.

It’s pretty cool stuff. Very neat to see stuff from movies such as Star Wars to actually come to life. Now, all we need is someone to develop lightsabres. You gotta check out IO2Technology’s website for some very nice pictures.
