In the ensuing battle between Blu-Ray and HD DVD, Sony, one of 9 companies backing the Blu-Ray format, recently released a 25GB Blu-Ray disc. The Blu-Ray disc is one proposed format in creating a DVDs for high-definition televisions. The discs produced by Sony come in both writable and rewritable formats.

The discs also come with Sony’s AccuCORE technology. The technology has some features that ensures the longevity of the discs.

Scratch Guard - Prevents the disc from being scratched and resists dust and static.

Archival Reliability - The disc is designed to protect the data recorded on it from being corrupted, so that image quality lasts.

Stable Writing - Sony’s Blu-Ray discs have a uniform cover layer that prevents the disc from fluctuating as data is being written on it.

Temperature Durability - The discs have warp protection in case it exposed to higher temperatures.

The discs also are able to write at 2x speed which will allow 72 Megabits of data per second (Mbps) to be transferred onto the disc. This is better for high-definition (HD) video recording.

As Blu-Ray technology comes onto the scene, other Blu-Ray and high-definition enabled devices will soon come out in the market. Sony, will soon be creating a Blu-ray Disc player, and built-in Blu-ray Disc drives into their Notebooks.

Theoretically, then you could edit a video taken on a high definition video camcorder on a HD enabled computer and place the file on a Blu-Ray disc, and watch it back on a Blu-Ray disc player.

The cost of these discs will be $20 for writable disc (one time only) and $25 for the rewritable Blu-Ray disc. Sony is also going to be producing a 50 GB dual layer disc which will cost $48 (write once) and $60 (rewritable).
