As computers begin to get smaller and more mobile (think the UMPC), Sony has developed the first working computer that can fit into your pocket. This computer isn’t a PDA or something like that - it’s a full functioning computer.

The VAIO UX Micro PC weighs only a pound and uses Microsoft Windows XP Professional as the computers operating system. The Micro PC uses a 1.20 GHz Intel Core Solo Ultra Low Voltage processing chip. This allows the PC to use increases the life of the battery.

The UX Micro has a 4.5-inch display with XBRITE technology. The PC also has a keyboard that slides out from under PC as pictured. It, therefore, allows one to conduct the same tasks as you would on a normal computer. The size of the PC as you can see is only the black screen area when the keyboard is slipped back.

Sony’s VAIO UX Micro personal computer also comes equipped with a stylus which you can use and also has a quick launch button. It is located on the side of the unit and allows quick access to commonly used programs.

The UX Micro PC also comes packed with Sony’s SmartWiâ„¢ technology. It allows the user to toggle between wireless WAN, LAN, and Bluetooth connections. Two cameras are included on the UX Micro - one that allows for Voice-Over IP, and video conferencing, and one in the back that takes images. It also includes a VGA connection so you can connect to a projector for a larger viewing area.

Sony’s Micro PC also includes a built-in biometirc fingerprint scanner so that only fingerprints registered will be able to access the PC. It also includes G-Sensorâ„¢ shock protection which prevents the loss of data an damage to the hard drive if the Micro PC is dropped.

For even more convenience they have a docking station which contain 3 USB connections, Ethernet, VGA, iLink® IEEE-1394 interface and an AV output. This allows monitors, speakers, and full sized keyboards to be added to the device when one is not using it in a completely mobile environment.

The VAIO UX Micro PC will be out it July 2006 and will run for about $1800.

It seems to me that Sony is looking to compete directly with Microsoft’s UMPC which Samsung and ASUS are manufacturing. Sony’s VAIO UX Micro PC I believe has a more features than the UMPC, but the UMPC has a wider display on which to work with.
