Scandoo: Checks Safety of Websites

Scandoo is a website that has appeared that reportedly is able to tell weather a site is safe to download from. Many internet searches lead to a site where we might be looking for a download, and sometimes we forget about safety before we hit the “Download” button. It also indicates weather a website is serving up adult material.

Scandoo has created a rather interesting way to solve this. You basically visit the Scandoo website and make a search through your favorite search engine (Google, MSN, Yahoo!, or Ask). Now when you get the results a symbol will appear before each website as pictured.

There are four symbols that I came across: Green with a checkmark (good), orange with a question mark (caution, also means the site hasn’t been classfied by Scandoo), red with an x (bad) and a bug with an x (very bad).

What makes this so interesting is that these symbols are embedded right into the search results.

How Does It Work?

Scandoo is created by ScanSafe technology. It basically scans websites in real time, and see if there is anything malicious behind the link you are about to click on. Of course, Scandoo is staying pretty tight lipped about what it scans for and what makes it decide one site is safe while another is unsafe.
