SanDisk Releases Fastest Memory Card for PSP

SanDisk has released the fastest memory stick pro duo gaming card for the PSP at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The card enables the user to store movies, games, digital images, and music onto the PSP.

The Card comes packed with software that allows the moving and converting the above mentioned files through a simple drag-and-drop interface. It also comes with SanDisk’s MicroMateâ„¢, a high speed Memory Card Duo PRO Reader that allows the RapidGX cards from SanDisk to transfer files at the fastest rate possible.

The SanDisk RapidGX card will only be sold in the 1GB capacity and will cost around $84.99. The PSP software and MicroMate reader ($40 value) will be packaged together with the SanDisk RapidGX card for a limited time. After that time you will need to buy it separately.

The MicroMate reader can read and write at speeds of 15 MB per second. That speed is roughly double the read and write speeds of the PSP when connected to a computer.

All things stored on a PSP need to be stored on memory cards, because the PSP does not contain any on board memory. The RapidGX card is about 3x faster than other Memory Stick PRO Duo Cards, which currently means that it is the fastest gaming memory stick out there.

SanDisk claims that the RapidGX card has longer video and movie play time than on Sony’s Universal Media Discs (UMD). Sony UMDs are proprietary cards that Sony sells it’s videos on.

Before I finish off, I’m just going to quickly discuss the PSP software mentioned earlier. The software uses a simple drag-and-drop interface, converts videos to Mpeg-4 format so the PSP can read it, and contains different file compression options as well so that you are able to place more files on the card.

SanDisk’s RapidGX card will be available in the summer of 2006.
