Samsung has developed an LCD screen that is almost as thick as your credit card. The LCD screen measures 0.82 mm in thickness. The whole technology which integrates the display, with a shock resistant layer is called “i-Lens”.
Samsung needed to design the light guide plate subassembly and the glass substrate which actually took up the most room of the LCD screen. The LCD screen also directly attaches the plastic layer on top of it instead of leaving 2 to 3 mm of room making it easier to read in sunlight.
The whole technology shaves off 1.4 to 2.4 mm of the thickness of the average mobile phone. The new LCD display comes in 2.1 and 2.2 -inch diagonal widths, have a 240 x 320 pixels, and a 500:1 contrast ratio. Samsung is hoping to get these mass produced in the latter half of 2007.
