Samsung has released a new flash memory chip that is an improvement over the current fastest chip in the OneNAND line. The current line boasts a 1GB flash memory chip and Samsung has doubled that to 2 GB.

The rate at which data is written to the chip was also increased from 9.3 Megabytes /sec. to 17 Megabytes/second.

Samsung states that these the OneNand chips have promsing abilities, because of their fast read and write speeds. These chips could be used in computers, cell phones, as memory cards, or in digital cameras.

What is also unique about these chips is that they can add multiple chips together to really increase their write speed. For example, if you put eight 2 GB chips together you would have an astounding write speed of 137 MB/s.

These chips can be used as buffer memory inside hybrid hard drives and Samsung has already developed a prototype for such a gadget.
