Samsung Creates 4GB Solid State Disk

Yesterday Samsung announced that they had a 4 GB Flash memory solid state disk (SSD) ready for production. The disk can also be used as flash memory cache for computers and notebooks using Windows Vista as the compter’s operating system.

Windows Vista (the next Windows operating system) uses a tool called Windows ReadyBoost. This feature allows the use of the flash memory cache. Users don’t realize it but there are many mulit-second delays that occur when they are swithcing back and forth between programs on the computer.

The average hard drive can process roughtly 100-200 requests from the user and programs running. However, with Samsung’s Flash SSD, your computer would be able to handle around 5000 requests.

Windows ReadyBoost basically places data such as code to switch programs, and prepares a user’s favorite programs so that when a user requests that action, the computer doesn’t really need to delay at all.

Samsung’s 4 GB SSD can be placed on a motherboard that contains an ATA port and works in tandem with standard RAM. Windows Vista compresses data on ReadyBoost devices so technically you can actually store 8 GB of data on Samsung’s 4 GB Flash SSD.
