Microsoft Officially Releases the Ultra-Mobile PC
Microsoft has finally released its new gadget that had been codenamed: Project Origami. It has announced the release of the Ultra-Mobile Personal Computers (UMPCs). Microsoft set up a site (origamiproject.com) 3 weeks ago that contained teaser videos about what the gadget could be. Every week it released a new video.
In week 2 Microsoft quietly let us know what the new gadget would be. Embedded in the page’s source code were the words: Origami Project: the Mobile PC running Windows XP
Well, now Microsoft has released full details about the Mobile PC and what it will be able to do.
What is it?
Microsoft’s Ultra-Mobile PC is similar to a computer; however, it is able to be very portable and smaller than a laptop computer. It allows you to take it anywhere and connect it to accomplish tasks on the fly.
What Can I Do With It?
The Mobile PC allows you to do tasks that you would do on a computer. You can access the Internet, create documents in Microsoft Office, and so on. You also are able to tap into GPS software that can help you to get around town. Other software that is compatable with the Windows environment may also be used.
The Mobile PC also receives input via a touch screen (I wouldn’t recommend touching it with your fingers just because it could make the screen really dirty), stylus, or the on-screen keyboard.
It also is able to synchronize with your computer so you can store all your music, photos, and TV shows with you. Another neat feature is that you can use the Ultra-Mobile PC to download music and movies in a total wireless environment.
You are able to watch movies and videos on the device and even play games on it as well.
What Software is on The Ultra-Mobile PC?
The Operating System (OS) is Windows XP. With that included in the device is Microsoft Office, Streets and Trips, One Note (from Microsoft), and Movielink. It also includes Pharos’ GPS system and Sling Media’s TV viewing software as well.
What Are The Hardware Specs of The Ultra-Mobile PC?
Before we jump in, it’s important to know that there are two companies that manufacture the UMPC. Samsung has created one (this is the one you see in the picture) and ASUS has also created one - both, of course, in conjunction with Microsoft.
On with the list:
| Tech Spec | Value |
| OS: | Windows XP Tablet PC 2005 |
| Display: | approx. 7″ Display |
| Resolution (min.): | 800 x 480 |
| Weight: | 2 pounds |
| Bluetooth and Wi-fi: | Enabled |
The UMPC looks good. I’m not sure how fast it is the CPU is or how long the battery life is (Intel only says it lasts for a long time). The price will definitely be a factor, though no one seems to know that one either. Eight-hundred dollars has been the value kicked around the Internet. The release date hasn’t been announced yet either.
There will, most likely, be further announcements on the Ultra-Mobile PC. It also will be interesting to see if the PC lives up to they hype or is just that - hype.
