HP Creates Grain-Sized Chip

Okay when I read about this story, I thought this new creation from Hewlett Packard was pretty neat. I’m currently studying Electronics Engineering so I see some small chips. Of course chips today have gotten smaller thanks in part to the transistor.

I’m going to simplify the new development by HP so if you aren’t a geek like me don’t worry. HP has developed a chip that is the size of a grain of sand. That, my friends, is amazingly tiny.

The small chip would work wirelessly so it wouldn’t need to be wired up to anything at all. The chip actually has it’s own antenna which is pretty astounding considering its size

HP says that this tiny chip can be placed or embedded in any object. The chip is 2mm or 4mm square. Because it is so tiny HP thinks that they will embed them in paper and place them in a booklet which you can simple peel off and stick where needed. (Hmm a sticker that’s also a chip).

What’s also so amazing is that it can transfer 10 megabits per second which is 10 times faster than the speed of the popular Bluetooth network.

HP has named the chip MemorySpot. Some possible uses of the MemorySpot are:

  • Act as a chip on wristband of medical patient which stores all medical and health info
  • Add the chip to a photograph which would provide music or narration.
  • Use the chip on a postcard which can contain photos, music, or sounds.
  • MemorySpot can be added to a paper and used to track corrections or additions added to the text as well as graphics and voice notes.
  • Used send data from a physical document to a photocopier in digital format eliminate the need to actually copy the original copy.
  • A security card with the MemorySpot on it which contains all information needed to have employees access a building for example.
  • Add a MemorySpot chip onto a drug bottle to ensure the drugs from the manufacturer and are genuine.

It’s pretty unique chip and HP states that it really is trying to make the gap between digital and physical aspects of life smaller as you can see in the possible uses given.

I just that it was fascinating that such a small chip could transfer data at such a good rate and really have a lot of potential.
