Google To Release Online Spreadsheet
Well, Gazotto predicted that 2006 would be a big year in the war between Google and Microsoft. Google announced that it will be launching an online spreadsheet (think Microsoft Excel). However, unlike Excel it won’t have any advanced features such as macros.
As E-Commerce Times stated, Google’s recent activity is leading many to believe that Google is willing to compete with Microsoft on the desktop level.
They recently purchased Writely (an online word processing service), and released Google Calendar. These are the really at the center or Microsoft Outlook.
Since, Google’s spreadsheet, though, is currently thought to be aimed at a less tech savvy market. I would expect that Google be working on a more advanced function of it’s spreadsheet as soon as it releases its newest creation.
Google is staying tight lipped as it always is. It won’t state if it is competing with Microsoft, but you can expect Microsoft to be watching Google more closely. I’m sure they aren’t too pleased with Google’s next move.
As E-Commerce Times also stated, Google is basically giving people software free, where Microsoft makes millions off of Microsoft Office and Outlook profits. While Google obviously doesn’t have as huge a market share as does Microsoft, Microsoft wouldn’t be happy if it makes dents in its profit margin.
If people find out that Google can do the job well enough they just might switch - and save some cash doing it.

I get a “page cannot be displayed” error on http://spreadsheets.google.com/ is that the correct link?
Also, you do not mention how Google might monetize this - will this also include some version of adsense to generate income for Google through advertising?

Hey there,
Well, I forgot to mention that the link may not work as Google is taking it up and down for testing purposes. (I probably should have added that.)
It seems to be working as I write this now.
As for monetizing it, they have a little screenshot on the page and it doesn’t seem to have any ads.
Google also released Google Calendar which doesn’t have any ads. They just might choose to not run ads on Spreadsheets.
I signed up to check out Google Spreadsheets but will have to wait Google to e-mail me back so I can really check it out.

Hi,
Wow Google is really going to be a tough competitor in the online spreadsheet arena. Though, I don’t believe that the power of Excel ever can be reached with an online application running a bunch of JavaScripts.
I really like what http://www.xcellery.com does. They built online capability into an Excel file itself (beside their browser editor). It’s the best of both worlds and it really works great.
Cheers,
John
