Google has taken another step in competing with Microsoft today, by signing a deal with Dell Computers. While Google has held the advantage online, Microsoft did eventually take notice of Google, when they began to write software.
Well, Google has made a move that would see their software placed on millions of new Dell Computers. The cost of the deal was not disclosed to the media however.
Microsoft knows all to well what happens when software is bundled on a computer. Remember Internet Explorer. It received its popularity from being put on every computer that came with Windows. Well, Google is trying to do something similar, because it no longer needs to persuade people to download the software. By having Google software on their computer, people will be more prone to use it and Google will reap the financial benefits.
Over the past couple of years Google has created such innovative products as Google Maps, Google Desktop, and Google Calendar. The Dell computers will contain Google Desktop, and have the browser’s default home page set to a page that is branded by both Google and Dell logos.
I think that Google has made a very smart move. I believe that Microsoft will feel a hit on it’s search engine, MSN, currently ranked 3rd on the web. And Google Desktop will add some easier functionality to searching one’s computer.
And while Google now doesn’t have software that will cripple Microsoft, expect this deal to act as a springboard for Google to release better software for the computer user. Will the software be in direct competition to Microsoft? We’ll just have to see.

1And Google continues the path to world domination. And I think I like it. MS needs some stiff competition, and who better than the great google? I’ll enjoy seeing this one play out over the long term.
