Many environmentalists go nuts when big companies consume power and burn so much fuel that they seem like hungry locusts - eating everything they find. Of course the large corperations always say they don’t have the cash do do anything about it.
Google on the other hand has decided that solar is the way to go. Up till now Google had made the outdoors and the sun as much a part of the workplace as possible. They’ve added as much light to enter the work areas and even encouraged their employees to work outside.
Now they have partnered up with EI solutions to add in solar panels to their Mountain View, California location that will create 1.6 Megawatts of power - that’s enough power to keep 1000 homes running on the juice.
The panels will cover the roofs of four main buildings, and a couple more across the street. Now while it seems like a lot the solar panels will only cover about 30% of the electricity used by Google. Do the math and you find out that Google uses enough power to more than 3000 home, but when you make millions I guess it doesn’t really matter.
I think Google is doing the right thing in doing their part in trying to cut down on the amount of electricity they use. If not for the environmental aspect, I bet the bottom line looks just as good.
