Circuit City, a popular electronics retail company has announced that its home theater forums have been attacked. When vistors visited the forum they were forwarded to a site located in Russia. Once there the site tried to install a “backdoor” on the victim’s PC.

Once the hackers have “backdoor” access to your computer, they are able to remotely access your computer. Of course this puts the computer in danger as the hackers can do anything with the computer.

Circuit City states that they know of around 200 visitors who were registered for the forum were redirected to the site. However, they don’t know how many unregistered visitors were redirected to the Russian website.

Circuit City did an investigation and found that the hackers only had a chance to harm victims for up to 2 days. They believe the attack occured on May 30, 2006. It is important to note that the hackers were targeting those using Internet Explorer and running Windows without Microsoft’s January patches.

The forum was accessed by going the to Circuit City website, pressing Home Theater Headquarters, and then pressing Discuss. Circuit City may offer a virus scan for its visitors.

Again this is shows how vulnerable companies are, but also those running IE and those not downloading the proper patches for their system.
