CeBIT 2006: Sony Ericsson HCB-100 Bluetooth Car Speakerphone

Over the next few weeks we’ll be looking at products that have appeared at this year’s CeBIT show in Germany. The first gadget we’re gonna take a look at is Sony’s new Bluetooth car speakerphone.

As many people know, there have been many claims that driving while you are holding a cell phone to your ear and talking is dangerous. Accidents and deaths have been attributed to drivers talking on cell phones.

Sony has produced the HCB-100, which hopes to make driving and talking on your phone a more safe experience. The speakerphone requires no installation whatsoever. It simply attaches to the visor of the car with a clip. The HCB-100 lasts for 20 hours of talking time and 25 days of standby time.

The speakerphone connects to Bluetooth enabled phones. It also has noise cancellation and echo reduction so that the conversation can be heard clearly on the other end.

Sony’s HCB-100 can handle 5 different Bluetooth connections. There are large and easily distinguishable buttons on the speakerphone so that you don’t get any more distracted while driving.

Another neat fact is that you don’t have to use it in the car only. You can also use it in your office for complete wireless and headset free communication.

Tech Specs

Here is a full list of technical specifications for the HCB-100.

Tech Spec Value
Weight: 89g (3.14oz)
Color: Black & Sliver
Talk Time: up to 20hrs
Standby Time: up to 300 hours

I think it’s a neat gadget, but people still will argue that talking at all while driving in a car is dangerous. Sony looks to have created a decent solution to the problem with long standby time and talk time. I only hope that the sound quality is as good as they claim.

The speakerphone comes with a cigarette lighter adapter, a standard charger, and user guide. Sony’s HCB-100 Bluetooth speakerphone will be available in the second quarter of 2006.
