“Slim, stylish mp3 player of elegant design with photo slideshow function.” That’s the description Samsung has given to the YP-Z5 Player Jukebox. Hmm . . . that sounds very familiar to the iPod nano doesn’t it?
It seems that Samsung wanted to create a music player that would beat the nano. Well let’s see if it can do that. The Samsung YP-Z5 has a slim design and an aluminum outfit. It uses a Digital Natural Sound engine (DNSe) to produce 3D sound, a bass enhancer, and a Street Mode feature where you can listen to music in noisy environments without raising the volume.
The music player also features a 1.8″ TFT LCD screen where you are also able to view slideshows of your favorite images. The player allows slideshows that also feature dynamic effects and zoom and pan.
The Samsung YP-Z5 comes in 2GB and 4GB capacities. That is similar to the storage capacities of the iPod nano. The music player allows for seamless subscription to music services such as Napster, Rhapsody, Yahoo! and MTV’s Urge. An FM Tuner will be released with the player in May.
Battery life, battery life, battery life. How long can this player last? Well the music player runs on a lithium-ion battery and can last up to a maximum of 35 hours. Another similar feature to the Apple iPod nano is that the YP-Z5 has a similar touch pad interface.
Many companies have tried to ride the nano wave and have unfortunately not been able to knock Apple off of it. Apple was the first one to come out with the nano and the Samsung YP-Z5 will give it a run.
The player has a 35 hour life compared to the nano’s 14 hours. It takes 2.5 hours to fully recharge the battery. Its long battery life is about the only feature that really separates the YP-Z5 from the nano. Time will tell if Samsung does indeed give Apple a fight.
The 2GB Jukebox is 42.2 x 89.8 x 11.4 mm and weighs 56 grams. The 4GB Jukebox is 42.2 x 89.9 x 12.3 mm and weighs 58grams . The iPod nano is still slimmer at 40 x 90 x 6.9 mm and lighter coming it at 42 grams.
The Samsung YP-Z5 Jukebox will be available in March and the Samsung YP-Z5F (FM tuner) will be available in May.

1bah samsung doesn’t stand a chance agianst apple considering the homebrew support of the nano which include watching movies, playing doom, half-life and the likes, gb/gbc emulator and a whole lot of other games

2It is on Ebay for 199.99 from a powerseller. I hate Ipod controls so this will probably be abel to compete with it.

3it’s kind of awkward seeing samsung compete directly with the nano, despite that they actually supply the memory for it… although, i suppose samsung’s been in the mp3 player sector for a while, so this was bound to happen eventually.

4Well, Samsung is a good brand, regardless. It should give Apple a run for its money, well, at least the Nano.

6Judging by reviews I think the samsung is far better than the nano (which has been known to snap in half in some instances, due to its thin size). OK, so it doesn’t have an FM radio, but neither does the nano, and besides, they don’t work so whats the point (though samsung are soon to release the same model with an FM radio). It’s an MP3 player, so it doesn’t need games, and if you need something with an address book and contact list, then buy a PDA or a phone. Also, the nano is prone to finger marks and scratches (both the body and the screen) whereas the samsung is not. And the touch pad, you’ll get used to it, they’re only criticising it because they can’t find anything else TO criticise. Plus, it supports loads more file types than the nano’s few (AAC and lossless are the only ones I can think of) so you have much more choice. A point that benefits everyone is that the samsung is a flash drive as opposed to hard disk, meaning it wont skip and take damage if it gets bumped about alot. And finally, the YP Z5 has 35 hours battery life over the nano’s 14, so that means you spend less time recharging and more time listning. They are both roughly the same price, which is why I am going to buy the samsung YP Z5. And so should you.
