Apple Unveils Boot Camp

Apple though has released a new beta software called Boot Camp that allows a Mac running on an Intel processor to use Microsoft Windows.

Boot Camp will be packaged with the the next major release of MacOS X. The software requires itself to be installed on the host computer. Once the computer is restarted the user has the option of switching to the Microsoft Windows operating system.

So, is this a new plan by Apple to begin selling or supporting Windows? No. Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing states the reason behind the move:

“…many customers have expressed their interest to run Windows on Apple’s superior hardware now that we use Intel processors. We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to Windows users considering making the switch.”

You can download the software now at the Apple website, but it’s only a preview software that can be used on a trial period. As stated previously, it will be included in Mac OS X version 10.5.

What I found pretty rude was this, “Apple does not provide support for installing or running Boot Camp.” They built the software and users should have the right to receive support for it especially from a company such as Apple. Just because it is used to install a competing operating system doesn’t take this out of the hands of Apple.

The new software is being installed on an Intel-based Mac and since they built the software Apple should really be offering support.

All-in-all it’s good to see that Apple listened to their clients and developed this. Some would say it’s the best of both worlds.
