Apple Quiets the iPod
Apple, after having a law in France limiting the volume to 100 decibels in mp3 players and facing a lawsuit in the States, has agreed to limit the volume of the iPod.
It will release a software update that will allow the user to set the volume at a safe level. Apple also has included a parental feature that allows the volume to be set by a parent and lock it under a combination. The software update applies to fifth-generation iPods and the iPod nanos.
The option however, doesn’t fix the volume on the gadget, but allows the user or parent to decide whether they will use the volume limiter or not. I like that. In the article I wrote about that lawsuit, I said how that whole thing was a money grab and that one logically assumes that playing music loudly will damage your hearing.
It’s good to see that one still has the option to use or not use the volume limiter and leaves that up to the user’s desires.
You can get the update by going to apple.com and downloading it, or you will be prompted to do so if through iTunes, if you are an iPod owner.
